This presentation and group activity aimed to encourage more girls to consider following science subjects and pursuing related careers.
The S2 cohort of girls from Turriff Academy learned about structural engineering, and how physics and maths are used as the fundamentals behind design, thanks to a visit from Kate Mitchell, a senior structural engineer from Arup. The presentation also emphasised key aspects of engineering such as teamwork, problem solving and collaboration, and the importance of having a diverse team to gain different insights and come up with the best solutions. This was demonstrated in the workshop that followed when pupils worked in small teams to build towers and bridges and load them to failure.
The session was very well received by the pupils, with good levels of involvement and teamwork.
This timing of this activity - as pupils prepare to make decisions about which subjects to pursue in S3 - was particularly useful.
A themed assembly to equip S5 and S6 pupils with the skills, knowledge and attitudes that are required to succeed in the world of work.
An interactive session with healthcare professionals for S3 pupils.
