A trio of specialists from Well-Safe Solutions brought the subject of sustainability and the environment to life for P5-7 pupils from Charleston Primary.
Well-Safe Solutions decommissions on and offshore wells. Three of the company's environmental and sustainability experts developed a presentation and group exercise for P5-7 classes from Charleston Primary to support the relevant parts of the school curriculum.
During their presentation, the Well-Safe team introduced oil and gas wells and the decommissioning process. They posed the question: how would you protect marine life while removing the well? and talked pupils through a simplified four-step process that is used by the company to minimise any environmental impact.
Pupils then completed worksheets in smaller groups. The worksheets had an outline of the sea bed, well and rig. Pupils worked together to draw the at-risk marine life at each stage, and draw or describe the practical steps that could be taken to eliminate this risk.
The activity was carefully designed to support the curriculum and the school's goal of helping pupils to learn about marine life and how human activity interacts with it. The session included lots of visual stimulation for the pupils, such as photographs of offshore assets and some of the wildlife that had been spotted nearby, including sharks and seals.
The Well-Safe team also brought examples of downhole equipment into the classroom, explaining its function to the children.
The younger children enjoyed learning about the variety of life that is found just offshore of their school. The drawing activity encouraged them to think creatively about different sea creatures and how technology, procedures and planning can be used to minimise impact on them.
The older pupils were able to plan and produce mitigations that would be included within environmental impact assessments.
The session produced good engagement and a variety of questions about decommissioning projects and work operations.
The older pupils also took the chance to ask questions about another sustainability project they were working on, which related to the carbon footprint of electric vehicles (EVs).
This demonstrated that they were able to make the connection between the topics and were keen to glean extra knowledge while they had access to environmental specialists.
"This was a worthwhile experience for the Well-Safe Solutions team. The session provided the children with a unique opportunity to learn about the importance of sustainability in the local industry. This was the first session that we ran with the school and we hope to continue to support the curriculum where we can."
