A collaborative and innovative initiative to help young people consider careers in the energy sector.
The event aimed to help pupils understand the term Energy Trilemma, which refers to the need to balance the security, sustainability and affordability of our energy system as we transition towards net zero.
It comprised of a keynote speech, a series of fact-finding interactive workshops and a plenary session with the Energy Transition Zone (ETZ).
The participating organisations, all of whom are Young Person’s Guarantee pledge partners, were carefully selected to ensure that pupils gained exposure to different areas. These included carbon capture and storage, decommissioning, offshore floating wind and synthetic fuels and storage. The activity was captured by Energy Insider, another Young Person’s Guarantee pledge partner and a specialist in producing educational content for the energy sector.
The session provided pupils with a deeper understanding of the future direction of the energy sector. It informed them about some of the innovative and transformative work that is taking place within North-east Scotland and made them aware of the associated career opportunities for the next generation.
The interactive workshops allowed the pupils to learn about each employer's sphere of expertise, the work involved, and the associated skills and challenges.
The format of the workshops required pupils to work effectively in teams, assess potential risks, justify their decision making and learn about project planning and lifecycle.
The energy sector is changing and it is important that young people are aware of employers' skills requirements as they diversify and innovate.
The Energy Trilemma event set out to achieve this. The keynote session and introductory discussions provided pupils with a theoretical understanding of the energy industry and future skills requirements; they were then able to relate and apply this knowledge during the workshop tasks.
